So it’s almost 2012…and that’s neat. I just wanted to re-share some highlights of 2011 for thegflo, and it was a pretty good year. It started off with a ton of snow (the opposite of NY weather right now). Batteries played a show in all that snow at Pete’s Candy Store to about 5 people, but it turned out to be one of our favorites, and you can still stream it here. I recorded a solo album of my own electro-acoustic music using just a trumpet and laptop called Acousmatic in March and have been playing solo shows here and there ever since as a result (I finally played at the Stone!). In May, Batteries took a trip to Minneapolis which was good clean fun. This past summer, Carolyn and I were able to get away to Rehoboth, DE for my 30th birthday, and also Carmel, CA. Her blog Meatballs and Milkshakes has over 100 recipes on it, and if you like eating, you should make a point of checking her stuff out. ICE played at Mostly Mozart a bunch, and ICELab is officially a success with a bunch of great shows already having happened at BAC, I think Phyllis Chen’s was my favorite so far. In November, I played a first show with my new electro-acoustic trio, and I’m looking forward to more of that. My mini-studio soundFlowers did a couple of audio-post projects this fall for Gurfield Productions, and I’m looking forward to more of that as well. Wishing you well, -Gareth

Gareth Flowers is a trumpeter originally from Arlington, Virginia, and has been based in New York City since 2000. After studies at the Juilliard School with foci on performance and music technology, he began performing with the International Contemporary Ensemble, earning a reputation in contemporary music which has garnered critical acclaim from the New York Times.

He has recorded for Philip Glass, David Byrne, Anthony Braxton, Gabriel Kahane, DuYun, and many other fine musicians. ICE’s recording of Matthias Pintscher’s Sonic Eclipse is particularly notable. In 2009, he formed the space-pop duo the Batteries Duo, which released its first electro-acoustic recording in July 2010, Les Amusements. The same year, he quietly released his own first solo project Beautiful Melancholy. This past summer brought a new recording, Acousmatic, which is a record of solo electro-acoustic improvisations. Redefine Magazine called Acousmatic “…gorgeous or shimmery, or gorgeously shimmery…”

As an elecro-acoustic musician, he has done unofficial remixes for My Brightest Diamond and Tusia Beridze. Tonight, he plays electro-acoustic improvisations with a trio of Cody Brown on drums and Cory Smythe on synthesizer.

Lovely song, one of my favorite singers actually…I’m going to do a bunch of covers of it in a bunch of different production styles for this blog:

Production wise, this cover features an acoustic drum kit, a simple sine/square bass, a nice string machine emulation courtesy of Sonicouture, and a triangle wave synth hard through a super-res filter. Nothing is over compressed or overloud, the trumpet is mixed in the front, with just enough verb and delay on buses to make the whole thing gel. Some gentle EQ applied here and there to get everything sitting just about right. I went for a vibe that is not particularly glossy or modern sounding.

The great thing about Eddie’s music is that his happiness and general zest for life come through in every song. Even though I certainly chose a ‘cooler’ vibe for this cover, a little downtempo, a little lounge etc…I wanted this cover to sound real and organic also.
